INSTALLATION
The 'GENIE' Control Unit should be installed using the mounting brackets in an environment where it is not subjected to water spray, excessive temperature changes or abnormal vibration. It should be positioned where the user has easy visual monitoring of the led displays in order to ascertain the operating modes
if necessary.
The 'GENIE' system is supplied with a plug in pre-wired 2 metre loom assembly.This loom assembly is to interconnect the Alternator and Control Unit. The wires for Battery Sense (x3) and Electronics Supply are separate from the Alternator loom and need to be wired as follows:-
The 3 battery sense wires (Red, Yellow & Green) must be wired as such that they always see the output of the Alternator. The 'GENIE' is not recommended for use where the battery charging is switched via a mechanical switch for two major reasons, the first is there would be no electrical isolation between the various battery banks which would cause
the battery charges to equalise and may provide the 'GENIE' with the wrong information. The second reason is because of the possibility that any one of the sense wires could be deselected, causing the unit to go into a "fault" condition, thereby incorrectly operating the charge output control.
The Pink wire is the electronics power feed to the'GENIE' and must be wired to a permanent ignition feed when the engine is started.
The Alternator control circuit is protected by a 5 Amp 7 Amp on the higher output units) anti-surge fuse and any replacement should meet the same specification. Using any other type of fuse will make the warranty void.
The Alternator should be mounted correctly where:-
a) There is reasonable free air around the unit to enable the cooling fan to cool the unit at all speeds;
b) The fan belt is installed correctly in-line to reduce the possibility of excessive wear and generating frictional heat especially when Alternator is used in Boost mode;
c) The pulley ratio has the correct ratio that enables the Alternator to rotate at sufficient r.p.m. to provide the required output;
d) It is mounted such that it is not affected by heat being emitted from the exhaust system.
e) The correct drive pulley to alternator drive pulley ratio is chosen because if the speed of the Alternator is too slow the output may be reduced and the correct Boost and Float operation may not be available and in the worst case will cause the output voltage to switch on/off at a low frequency.
WIRING DETAILS
Pink 16/02:- +12 volt power feed via ignition switch. This provides the power to the 'GENIE' when the ignition is switched on and the engine is started.
Red 16/02:- Sense wire for engine battery.
Yellow 16/02:- Sense wire for Domestic No. 1 battery.
Green 16/02:- Sense wire for Domestic No. 2 battery.
The remaining wires are prewired
White24/02:- Positive alternator control wire.
Black24/02:- Negative alternator control wire.
On /2 versions the large cable is the temperature sensor and must be strapped to a battery cable NEAR TO A BATTERY.
TACHOMETER
If the 'GENIE' alternator has a different diameter pulley to the replaced alternator, it may be necessary to re-calibrate the tachometer.
