MODE OF OPERATION BUCCANEER

The X-ALT BUCCANEER is a stand-alone alternator charge and/or boost controller suitable for sensing a single battery. The single battery may form a integral part of a multi-battery installation. It measures the sensed battery voltage when the ignition is switched on and from the measurement determines if boost charging is required. If the measured voltage is below 12.6 (25.2) volts the unit will switch to boost charge mode and provide 5 cycles of boost. Each boost charge comprises of 16/17 minutes at the increased charge voltage 14.8 (29.6) volts followed by 3/4 minutes at the float voltage of the controlled alternator. As it changes from boost to float and vice versa the leds change to indicate mode of operation.

MODE OF OPERATION SKIPPER & CAPTAIN

The X-ALT SKIPPER & CAPTAIN are stand-alone alternator charge and/or boost controller (or for want of a better definition, an alternator charge controller) suitable for sensing a 1, 2, or  3 independent bank battery system depending on the version. It measures the sensed battery voltages when the ignition is switched on and from the measurements determines if boost or an increased charge is required. If the measured voltage of any sensed battery is below 12.6 (25.2) volts the unit will switch to boost mode and depending on the voltage measured they will calculate the best charge routine necessary to recharge the batteries. As it changes from boost to float and vice versa the leds change colour to indicate mode of operation. Alarm indication is displayed by the alarm led and under normal conditions the unit will switch off and return to float mode. In float mode the control will either be via the alternators regulator or via the 'Skipper & Captain' which will control the float voltage at 13.8 volts if higher than the standard float voltage of the alternator. With temperature compensated control the "Skipper" and "Captain" will adjust the charging voltage according to the ambient temperature detected by the sensor. On the "Captain" with alternator over temperature protection the charging voltage is reduced to a low level to reduce the power requirements enabling the alternator to cool down to a safe level before switching back to its charge routine.

X-ALT SKIPPER or CAPTAIN is being used on multi-battery installations we recommend that our range of X-SPLITS or X-PORT are used to split the charge to the various batteries. This is to ensure that the alternator does not have to generate excessively high voltage to achieve the target charge value. If the alternator has to overcome all the losses the output voltage may exceed the alarm safety set point.

  • If the X-ALT BUCCANEER is being used on a dual-battery bank system we recommend that our X-SPLIT or X-PORT is used for the same reasons as above.
  • If the batteries are connected to a separate charging source whilst the engine is not running, it must be disconnected before the ignition is switched on otherwise the X-ALT will not be able to measure the true battery voltage.
